The leaves are coming down, the grill is getting less use, and before long the first snow will be in the forecast. If you have an American Pro deck or porch, here is some good news: your fall to-do list is a lot shorter than your neighbors'. No sanding, no staining, no sealing. Just a little tidying and a few smart habits will carry you right through to spring.
Here is a simple plan for the weeks ahead.
Why a PVC Deck Makes Winter Easy
Wood decks go into winter needing protection. Composite boards still contain wood flour or fiber, so moisture can find its way into the core wherever the cap is cut, drilled, or nicked.
American Pro boards are different. TrueGrain Deck, Legacy PVC Decking, and our Porch Flooring are cellular PVC through the core, with no wood fiber at all. That means there is no moisture path anywhere, including at cut ends and fastener holes. The boards won't rot, swell, cup, or grey out, and capped PVC stays slip resistant in rain and snow. So instead of protecting the boards, your fall chores are really just about keeping things clean.
Step 1: Clear the Leaves and Give It a Wash
Leaves that sit on a wood deck all winter can leave stains behind. Cellular PVC has no wood content to soak up those stains, but a clean deck still looks better and lets snow melt off evenly.
- Sweep or blow off leaves, pine needles, and acorns, especially in corners and along the house.
- Wash with soap and water. That is the whole maintenance routine for American Pro decking and porch flooring. A soft brush and a bucket of soapy water will lift summer's pollen and dirt.
- Rinse well and let it dry.
There is no need for any sealer or coating before winter. The boards never need one.
Step 2: Check Gutters and Drainage
While you are outside, take a look at what drains toward your deck. A clogged gutter that spills onto the same spot all winter can build up ice in one place, which is a slip risk on any surface. Clear the gutters, make sure downspouts point away from the deck and stairs, and keep the space under the deck free of leaf piles so air can move.
Step 3: Move Furniture and Planters
Stack or store patio furniture you won't use until spring, and lift planters off the boards so water does not sit trapped underneath them. If you keep a few chairs out for those sunny winter afternoons, that is fine. TrueGrain's top layer is a clear, high-hardness film engineered to resist abrasion from foot traffic, patio furniture, pet claws, and grit, so everyday use is exactly what it was built for.
Step 4: Plan for Snow
When the snow does come, a gentle approach works best on any deck surface:
- Use a plastic shovel or a broom and push along the length of the boards rather than across them.
- Skip the metal edges and ice picks. Chipping at ice with a sharp tool is the fastest way to scratch any deck surface.
- Ask before using ice melt. Products vary a lot. If you have questions about what to use on your specific boards, give us a call and we will point you in the right direction.
Live near the water? Salt air does not corrode or degrade cellular PVC the way it attacks wood and wood fiber, which is one reason our boards are a favorite on Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard.
Step 5: Get Ready to Host
The holidays bring guests, food, and the occasional spilled drink. A few tips for hosting season:
- Wipe spills promptly. Soap and water handles most of them. Our Legacy PVC and porch board stain warranty covers permanent staining from food and beverage when cleaned within one week of exposure, so there is no need to panic mid-party.
- Put a mat by the door to catch grit and snow from boots before it gets tracked across the boards.
- Keep the stairs clear. Those are where guests are most likely to slip, so give them a quick sweep before people arrive.
